What are their interests? How do they communicate? Blog development plan
One community I would like to reach is that of immigrants from the former Soviet Union hoping to keep up with news from home. I’m especially interested in attracting the attention of young people who don’t see much coverage of their country of origin in the news.
Many of these immigrants live in the Chicago area. After New York, Illinois has the largest population of Eastern European immigrants — 256,927 — according to the 2000 census.
Many of those Eastern Europeans are from Ukraine. 20,729 Ukrainian immigrants lived in Illinois at the time of the 2000 census. After New York and California, Illinois has the third largest Ukrainian population of the United States.
According to the 2000 census, most immigrants from the former U.S.S.R. came from Russia (340,175) with Ukraine (275,155) following close behind.
Another group I think would be interested in reading my blog is that of Peace Corps volunteers who served or are serving in Georgia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan or Russia.
In Georgia, where Peace Corps has been active since 2001, 82 volunteers are currently serving and 255 have served to date.
In Ukraine, the program has been active since 1992, attracting a total of 1,746 volunteers over the years with 374 of them serving now.
Kyrgyzstan’s program started in 1993. 134 volunteers are currently serving there, bringing the total number of volunteers to 709.
The Peace Corps was active in Russia from 1992 to 2003. 729 volunteers participated in that program.
